Indoor vs. Outdoor Display Graphics
When discussing display graphics you must distinguish between outdoor and indoor applications. Different applications have different requirements.
Indoor display graphics are usually set up in retail stores, malls, trade shows and conferences. Outdoor display graphics are things such as vinyl banners, signage, adhesive vinyl used for vehicles or window graphics, large outdoor posters (usually printed on vinyl or fabric), and streetscape banners.
The major distinction is that outdoor graphics are exposed to the elements and they therefore require special inks in order to be waterproof and resistant to UV light. That means you must use special solvent inks that will not fade nearly as fast in bright sunlight, and are very water resistant.
Using solvent based printing for indoor items is often a wise thing to do. For instance, banners that you expect to use a number of times will have to be rolled and unrolled, and non-solvent inks are much more likely to scratch and break down with this kind of handling. Or if you want to place a vinyl banner across the front of your display table at a trade show it is likely to be bumped and have drinks spilled on it. The more accident resistant you make it, the better.
