The Activation Cycle of Acne Outbreaks
The first changes, the skin goes through, during the activation cycle of acne outbreaks are excess amounts of sebum that the sebaceous glands release. An excess production of sebum can be due to hormonal changes and stress, among other factors. Skin problems usually appear on the mid-back, chest, nose, forehead and chin because of the large quantities of sebaceous glands found on these areas.
Sebaceous glands are found deep inside the skin. Each follicle connects to a sebaceous gland that contains a tiny hair. Surrounding skin and follicles are lubricated by a oily material called sebum that the sebaceous glands release. Sebaceous glands are found in almost every part of your body.
Sebaceous glands (which vary in size) are stimulated to produce sebum by hormones (specifically androgen hormones). In males and females, androgens are also produced by the adrenal glands. An enlargement of the oil glands occur when adrenal glands release an excess amount of hormones which often occur during puberty and in stressful situations.
The possible accumulation of dead skin cells and sebum can cause the follicle to clog. The build-up of oil and dead skin cells forms blemishes such as blackheads and whiteheads which are two of the most common comedones.
P. acnes (Propionibacterium acnes) are bacteria that are a part of the skins natural defense mechanism. The intention is to prevent attacks from other harmful bacteria. When follicles or pores are clogged, P. acnes are trapped inside. The skin can become inflamed and irritated because P. acnes change their chemical structure within a blocked follicle.
The effects of acne blemishes
The effects of acne can make the skin red, puffy, sensitive and even itchy.
Acne vulgaris is the most common type of acne. It can occur in different stages. Whiteheads and blackheads are the most common comedones and are usually characteristics of mild acne cases.
More severe cases are usually identified by big painful masses under the skin. They are called nodules or cysts and are the most usual types of severe acne. Acne scarring can occur due to the rupture of a cyst or nodule.
Mild, moderate or severe acne can have an impact on your skin. Acne sufferers often tend to scratch and pick at the infected areas not knowing that this can trigger the appearance of more skin blemishes.
Acne sufferers are often not aware that further irritation and inflammation can be self inflicted, due to scratching and picking of zits. Smooth, supple and blemish-free surfaces are attained by the proper care and attention to your skin.
